Storm Damage In Entry Way

This home had flooding caused by severe storms that recently affected the area. The storms caused flash flooding that then ran into the home. As you can see from this picture, there was still water pooled in the floor when we arrived.

Fullerton Damage from a Fire

A Grease fire in this Fullerton kitchen damaged the range, back wall, wall cabinets, and the walls. The layer of soot was wipeable from the vinyl wallpaper and wood finished cabinets. The primary concern was removing the smoke odors from the house. An air scrubber, hydroxyl generator, and a final light fogging mitigated these smells and restored the home. Count on SERVPRO for a fast response with great results.

Restoration, the final step, is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet, or may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Clutter vs. Hoarding: What's the Difference?

When is a mess more than just a mess? You may worry that your paper-piled desk or clothes-strewn rooms mean you're a hoarder bound for a TV reality show. But most people, even sloppy ones, fall somewhere closer to normal on the clutter scale.

What's Hoarding?

Someone who hoards collects huge amounts of things, often items of little value like ketchup packets or papers. "They don't have one can opener, they have 40," says Regina Lark, PhD, of the National Association of Professional Organizers. She specializes in helping hoarders.

Did You Know We Offer Sandbag Help?

The use of sandbags is a simple, but effective way to prevent or reduce flood water damage. Properly filled and placed sandbags can act as a barrier to divert moving water around, instead of through, buildings. Sandbag construction does not guarantee a water-tight seal, but is satisfactory for use in most situations.

  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.

We can help!

When storms blow through your area, there are many concerns to keep in mind. With heavy rains comes the possibility of flooding which can cause water damage, then there is also mudslides which can cause structural damage.  Please remember that immediate action is crucial. The faster we begin the restoration process the less likely you are to experience secondary damage.

Nicotine

The nicotine in tobacco that stains skin and teeth also leaves the same stains on walls. Houses inhabited by smokers may have brown or yellow stains or streaks on the walls from years of cigarette smoke. While heavy nicotine staining may require priming and repainting the walls or applying new wallpaper, less-porous materials such as wood paneling often come clean with a good scrub. SERVPRO cleansers that cut grease help cut through nicotine stains as well.

Install Water Detection Devices

A water detector is a small electronic device that sounds an alarm when its sensor is in contact with moisture.  Its main benefit is that it detects low moisture levels or slow leaks that often go unnoticed.  Install it near water heaters, sump pumps, washing machines, dishwashers and toilets to prevent extensive damage and mold growth.

Investigate Leaks Right Away and Fix Promptly

If you opt to ignore moisture damage, or postpone making the necessary repairs, be prepared to experience mold, mildew, dry rot, or even structural damage to your home.  Keep in mind that homeowner’s insurance provides coverage for damage that is sudden and accidental.  Damage that results from lack of maintenance is not covered on a standard homeowners insurance policy.

Blocked Gutters Can Cause Water Damage

Clean your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockage and ice dams. Standing water can cause damage to your gutters and roof, and unmanaged overflow may create puddles that could damage your foundation. Don’t forget to clean downspouts to ensure water can flow through, and secure downspouts so that they point away from the home.

Dry Cleaning Sponge for Soot Cleanup

Use the dry-cleaning sponge (chemical sponge) to wipe the soot and smoke stains. This stage is essential, as these sponges use special chemicals to lift stains from walls. Never use soot cleaner or water before you use a dry-cleaning sponge, or you could spread the soot and make it impossible to remove with a chemical sponge. Begin wiping the walls gently with the dry-cleaning sponge. After a few strokes, turn the sponge to a different side so you’re always using a clean surface. When all sides are soiled, slice off the sides with a knife to reveal fresh surfaces beneath. Or simply grab a new sponge. Make sure you use a wiping motion the entire time. If you scrub the stains, you may spread them and work the soot deeper into the surface.

Before you Clean up Soot

Protect

Before you clean the house, you should wear proper protection. Soot, smoke and debris can be dangerous to inhale, so wear a respirator if there is significant soot in the damaged area. Wear long pants and sleeves to protect your skin. You should also wear gloves and eye protection. Since you will be freeing soot as you clean, it’s important to lay down floor protection and remove any furniture or household objects that are not damaged. If the damaged area is small, you can probably get away with simply covering furniture with plastic or sheets. But if you’re cleaning an entire room, it’s wise to remove those clean items and even seal off other rooms that are undamaged. Be mindful of the shoes you’re wearing so you don’t track soot stains into other rooms.

Ventilate after Smoke Damage

Ventilate

First and foremost, open those windows. If it’s cold outside, put on a jacket! Sorry, but the first thing you need to do is ventilate the house and get fresh air flowing. Open all doors and windows in the home. You can also use fans (the bigger the better) to encourage airflow. Turn off your HVAC system to prevent spreading of the smoke and soot.

One of Our Certified Technicians Removing Mold

It only takes a small water leak, or even excess humidity, for mold to form in your Fullerton home or business. Then, mold can spread quickly through the property in as little as 48 hours. Mold can produce allergens and irritants, and it has the potential to cause other health effects. If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Understanding Mold

Microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, so removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

Pipe Burst

A common causes of water damage are pipes leaking or bursting. In this case, the pipe burst connected to the water heater. Most water heaters hold anywhere from 70 to 100 gallons of water.

Vent cleaning

Vent cleaning is a preventative measure to reduce illness in the environment. Ducts will be cleaned anywhere from 3 to 5 years, depending on the circumstances.

Removing contents from bio hazard

Technicians are removing contents from a bio hazard containment. The containment was set up in a living room. The room had to under go odor treatments and hazardous material removal.

Sauna Fire

This was a fire in a sauna at a Fullerton gym. The fire was a result of an outlet shorting out. It burned the ceiling tiles and the floor. Smoke and water damage also affected other rooms as a result of the fire and the fire sprinklers.

Mold Remediation

Drywall is being removed in preparation for mold remediation. This is done under containment so the spores don't spread

Mold On A Baseboard

Sometimes the signs of mold are obvious. Mold on the outside of the wall can indicate growth inside the wall cavity.

Thriving shrubs can be a beautiful thing – except when their roots wrap around your pipes and break them.  That’s why it’s important to minimize landscaping near utility pipes or, if necessary, remove trees and shrubs that have become too big.
